To grow hair long it needs to be in good condition. Don't put harsh chemicals on it, and make sure it gets plenty of moisture. To keep it in good condition, put cholesterol on it once a week for about a half hour, then rinse it out and follow with a rich conditioner. You will need to sleep on a satin pillowcase, too. The friction caused by a normal pillowcase can break the hair, but the satin won't do that. Good luck!

Trim it every now and then when you get split ends and shampoo regularly and just keep doing regular stuff.

Your hair is always growing and if you just leave it alone, it will get longer. However, since a lot of African-Americans have very brittle hair, whatever has grown out tends to break off very easily.

You should know that hair is formed inside your skin. It then pushes up to make room for new hair to form, and what you see is already the old formed hair. The ends are the oldest. You need to be very healthy inside, so that your body has all the nutrients to form good strong hair. Make sure you have a good balanced diet, get lots of exercise and keep free from disease and illness (hair usually gives a good indication of your health).

Since your hair is so fragile, it can break simply by crushing it. Be very careful how you handle your hair. Be extremely gentle! Never comb through it with any force -- if you meet any resistance, don't pull! You will only break your hair that way. If you have to wear any form of restraints (clips, pins, bands) make sure they are not tight and that they are coated if possible. Be extra careful when removing them!

Use a good but very gentle shampoo. Baby shampoo is NOT gentle! Don't do it too often since any shampoo will make your hair drier if used too often. A good moisturizer is important -- you want WATER in your hair, not oil. If you live in a dry area, you may consider some sort of coating (like oil) right after washing your hair, which will tend to hold the water longer, but then you have the other problem of too much oil in your hair! Try jojoba oil to see if that helps.

Do not use any kind of chemical processes (straighteners, colour) on your hair, if at all possible. These all weaken your hair, no matter how gentle they are, or how well you do them. Natural is best at all times.

Know also that as your hair gets longer, it will be more work to look after it. It's going to get in the way always, and you will be tempted to tie it back or use pony tails. Keeping it under control is important for many reasons, but if you put too much tension on it with tight rubber bands, you put too much stress on your hair, and it will break. You may even pull some of the hair out, especially those weaker hairs around the front hairline. Be gentle in everything you do!

Hair is always growing. It will get long. You want to make sure it stays on your head for as long as possible.
