My parents were born in Ethiopia. I was born in VA. I was raised here and never lived outside of the DC area. I am getting mixed answers if i am counted as African American or not. The area where here I live, i am always considered an AA. While goin on the internet i found a lot of people who dont consider us AA. For the record if it helps most my family has ******* features, were not all light skinned with silky hair (no offense). What do you think.

Ethiopians are not Light skinned, But Even African-Americans are not black at all. Ethiopians are part of the African/black race so get over it.

well i consider myself BLACK i have an african american friend and she has family and parent and sisters from africa and speaks african language[which i dont know what its called] i consider my self black because no 1 in my family came from africa and were all of mixed ancestry i speak english and so does everyone else...i dont know if i answered you question but i tried =]

I am Italian. I was born here and I am American. I dont call myself an Italian American. I am an American of Italian descent. So I would say you are an American with African descent. I would just call myself American, you were born here.

to be african american, you have to be from africa. when you get your citizenship, you are no longer african american, just american. your parents left africa to be in america, their fore, I assume they would rather be american.

There is a HUGE difference between African American and African.

A lot of Africans don't like African Americans.

my dad is a bus driver and he told me about how he's had Africans call him a

n i g g e r . most of them think they're better because they have "pure african blood".

guess they don't realize in America (which a noticible number of Africans are comming to), it doesn't matter if you're "etheopian" or "african"...your skin is black and that's all they see.

Some African Americans don't like Africans because they enslaved us.

American slavery is why life is so hard for the black citizen even in today's world.

honestly...the whole "your parents were born in Ethiopia" thing doesn't matter if you're living in America.

You might get asked where you're from if you have an accent.

you're skin is black.

that's all that counts.

that's all your parents bossess see.

you're not any better because you're not from America, you're still in America.

And don't say "******* features", you'll get your a s s beat.

especially you being black, you'll have plenty of other races wanting to hurt you because you're black (yes it still happens, KKK, skinheads, ect...) you don't want your own people against you because then you'd be alone.

Same thing with me. Both of my parents were born in Ethiopia but I was born here in America. I just say I'm African-American (on forms) to make it easier. When people ask me, I say I'm Ethiopian-American. I remember reading one day that you're not considered African-American until the 4th generation (that means your great grandchildren).

But whenever my mom is filling out a form and they have two choice of African-American or Black, I tell her to choose Black since she wasn't born here.
