Hair care for ethnic hair?

I have a 10 month old foster daughter, who is African American. Her hair is real tangled and full of knots. I used V05 conditioner the other night, but it didn't work as well as I thought it would have. I bought some Blue Duchess Oil Moisturizer to try, but need to know how often to use it, and what else I can do to keep the tangles and knots at bay as much as possible. Untilo I get her hair more managable, I am not even sure how long it really is and if I can do any type of braids, or cornrows in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Start combing her hair at the ends and work your way up slowly, you can also use a little detangling spray. Just keep it oily and braid it at night.

Try this... I will put a pic so you know exactly what it looks like. It's called Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil moisturizing hair lotion. It's amazing and it's not bad for her hair.. I'm not African American but my husband is(lots of women in his family) and my sister in law is too and they all love this product. I actually like it alot too. I promise you'll love it. And use shampoo's designed for her type of hair by the same line.

Here's a pic of the product
